‘Uh oh’: Windows 11 26H2 is here and Microsoft says it’s a ‘predictable, low-disruption update’, but many people are preparing for the worst
- Windows 11 26H2 is here and Microsoft says it’s a “predictable, low-disruption update”
- There are users on social networks who strongly disagree and express their nervousness to varying degrees.
- However, the 26H2 update could trigger the implementation of features that your PC has not yet received, so it could be very useful.
The annual Windows 11 update has arrived, and while 26H2 doesn’t bring any notable new features, it should trigger the feature rollout from earlier this year, if you don’t already have some of those parts.
As Microsoft explains: “Windows 11 version 26H2…delivers the latest Windows innovations with a streamlined update experience designed to minimize interruptions and help you stay secure, productive, and up-to-date.”
As with last year’s update, this is what Microsoft calls a “small enablement package,” meaning it’s a minimal download with a quick installation that occurs with a single reboot. All it effectively does is flip a switch to activate some preloaded code, without any new functions being delivered as such.

However, there is a key point to note because, as Microsoft says, this update “activates new features already included in the operating system through previous monthly service updates.”
So, if you haven’t yet implemented a feature, such as Microsoft’s change to load apps faster, or the ability to reposition the taskbar, or the various changes to the Start menu, applying the 26H2 update should ensure that everything that’s missing makes it to your PC.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that installing a new version of Windows 11 extends the support period (until October 2028 in the case of 26H2).
Analysis: there are many skeptics
I say that installing version 26H2 ought It means that any missing Windows 11 features are enabled on your PC, because obviously there’s no guarantee, but if you’ve been longing for a particular functionality, there’s a good chance you’ll get it by applying this update (certainly with older features, anyway).
However, as always, it’s never a good idea to rush into downloading an update, at least in my opinion, due to the danger of some unforeseen bug being introduced. Microsoft talks about this update being small and “designed to minimize disruption,” and it should be a clean enough install in theory, but people have gotten burned before, and the reaction on Reddit shows that pretty clearly.
Posting in response to Microsoft calling 26H2 a “predictable, low-disruption update,” one Redditor summed up the general sentiment in the thread by saying, “Well, now I’m very suspicious.” Another sign simply says, “Uh oh.”
And there are countless jokes or sarcastic comments about what 26H2 will be like. just great because the AI coded it, like, “Don’t worry, they told Copilot not to make any mistakes with this update.”
Another Redditor takes a similar attitude with me: “I’ll wait 3 weeks and then see what the situation is like before updating.”
There’s no need to jump straight into this update, so it seems prudent to hold fire for a moment and see if any annoying incidents occur that move the needle on the failure meter.
Let’s hope not, and then sometime in October you’ll be able to apply version 26H2 and hopefully get all the features your PC didn’t include on Microsoft’s rollout schedule. Speaking of which, it’s notable how many more people are complaining that Windows 11 is taking too long to roll out new capabilities this year, but that being said, you can’t exactly blame Microsoft for being cautious given that bugs are still a big problem for its desktop operating system.
However, slowing down to a crawl with feature deployment isn’t exactly an ideal solution, right? Microsoft needs to address some deeper issues with their testing processes here (and no, I won’t shut up until something is seen to be happening at the company in this regard).
