Old-school lens tool lets film cameras record two points of view at once
While adding visual effects in post-production has its advantages, there is also something to be said for filming them directly in-camera. That’s where Sterimax comes in, as it allows cinematographers to simultaneously superimpose two points of view (POV).
Currently developed by French startup Éclat Lens Tools, the Sterimax mounts to any film camera equipped with a standard 19mm rod mount. It is reportedly compatible with most cine lenses up to a maximum front diameter of 136mm.

Inspired by ancient stereoscopic systems, the device features two independently adjustable angle mirrors, each capturing a different point of view. Depending on the angles of those mirrors, the two views can be symmetrical (one completely superimposed on the other) or they can be asymmetrical: one takes up the entire screen and the other superimposes itself. part of that one.

The device can also be rotated 90 degrees with respect to the lens, for use in a horizontal position either vertical orientation. Whatever the case, an indexing system allows users to keep track of lens mount settings and mirror angle, so shots can be repeated as needed.
Of course, having said all that, you could simply cross-fade between two pre-recorded takes in post-production. So why bother with this?
“Stemirax offers an organic image directly on set,” Éclat says on its website. “Rather than filming material with a visual effect in mind for post-production, the cinematographer can view, adjust and integrate the final image live during production, in direct relationship with the actors, set and lighting.”

For now, the company has limited production to 25 pre-order units. Potential buyers can make inquiries through the website. We are still waiting to hear back on pricing and availability.
