- XMG warns that “substantial price increases for upcoming GPU shipments” mean it is raising prices for RTX 5090 laptops
- One model is already more expensive and bigger increases could soon be coming for other XMG laptops
- At the same time, we’re hearing more about Nvidia partners’ struggles over supplying components for the RTX 5090 desktop.
The position of Nvidia’s RTX 5090 looks more shaky by the day, as even more rumors emerge suggesting that this GPU is effectively shelved at this point, even if it hasn’t actually been discontinued.
You may have read about those recent rumors claiming that Nvidia has discontinued the RTX 5090, which is speculation that Team Green has firmly denied, I should make clear.
The new negative news comes first from laptop maker XMG on Reddit, which shares more bad news about the RAM crisis affecting its prices, specifically with the RTX 5090.

XMG says: “We expect laptops with RTX 5090 to become significantly more expensive again in the coming weeks.” (If you remember, we already saw XMG price increases last month.)
The company explains why: “Procurement conditions for the RTX 5090 laptop GPU have deteriorated considerably in a short period. We have received new information indicating substantial price increases for upcoming GPU shipments.
“At the same time, availability is becoming more limited. Replenishment orders that were already planned or, in some cases, even confirmed, are being significantly reduced in quantity.”
XMG notes that beyond these existing orders, “it is currently difficult to make reliable predictions about future supply volumes and delivery dates.”
The laptop maker also tells us that “other laptop GPUs are also facing supply constraints,” but that the “combination of massive price increases and extremely limited supply” is “particularly pronounced” with the RTX 5090.
That doesn’t sound very comforting, does it? The immediate result is that the Schenker Key 18 Pro laptop (Schenker is the parent company of depending on how the situation develops. Disgusting.
The second injection of negativity here comes from overclocker Der8auer in Germany, who, as Wccftech reports, has heard from one of Nvidia’s board manufacturing partners.
Add appropriate seasoning here, but the anonymous graphics card maker claims that while it has not been informed that the RTX 5090 is discontinued (Nvidia Germany also told this to Der8auer (backing up other statements to this effect from Team Green), it is currently unable to purchase the GB203 chip plus the VRAM package (32GB of GDDR7 video RAM) to make the RTX 5090 laptop card.
The most worrying part is that the board maker says this type of component shortage has happened before, but it has always been able to place a backorder to fulfill later. However, right now it’s not even possible to get a backorder from Nvidia.
A cooler maker for the RTX 5090 further notes that it has seen reduced orders from board manufacturers and does not have any orders for heatsinks for Nvidia’s flagship GPU for Q2 2027 at this time. Obviously, this suggests that RTX 5090 production quantities look even more unstable in the future.
Analysis: dark times
At some point, the accumulation of rumors begins to reach a kind of critical mass where it seems very unlikely that they are all wrong and that, in all likelihood, something is really going on.
In my opinion, it seems like we’re getting to this point with the RTX 5090 rumors. There are too many of them, and the indications at the retail level (disappearing stock and ever-increasing RTX 5090 prices, which have become truly ridiculous) also support the vine here.
What is worrying is the greater pessimism on the part of manufacturers such as refrigerators and the fact that the GPU of the RTX 5090 laptop is also involved. Keep in mind that this doesn’t use the GB202 chip seen in the desktop RTX 5090, but rather Nvidia’s GB203 silicon; However, the supply problem lies in getting the video RAM (3GB GDDR7 modules, which are now thinner and much more expensive than the 2GB modules used in the RTX 5080 laptop graphics card).
So while the RTX 5090 may not be discontinued, it appears that supplies are running so low for this GPU, in both desktops and laptops, that while it is still technically in production, quantities are dwindling to such an extent that the flagship is effectively being shelved.
All in all, it looks like an especially bleak time for high-end Nvidia graphics cards, and the fear is that things will get worse from here.
Certainly, when we look at the predictions for next year’s RAM crisis, they are universally pessimistic, and today there is a higher level of belief that memory supply problems could last for the rest of this decade. Of course, VRAM is tied to that, as is the demand for AI for GPU chips, and all of this could also impact the launch timeline for Nvidia’s next-generation GeForce graphics cards.
