Razer Blade 16 gaming laptop comes back to life with giant cooling solution made from a storage case, avoiding a huge repair bill
- A Redditor improvised a new cooling solution for his Razer Blade 16
- This was a fix for a broken heatsink that Razer wanted to fix for £2,500
- The cooler is made from a plastic storage box and has received praise from players on Reddit, but be careful when trying to DIY this one.
“That’s not a laptop cooler… that is a laptop cooler” like the old one Crocodile Dundee-says an inspired quote, and in this case, the custom cooling solution shown on Reddit is actually freaking huge.
Wccftech noted the story of a Redditor in the UK, who owned a Razer Blade 16 laptop in which the heatsink broke. That left the laptop useless, with a bill of £2,500 (around $3,300 / AU$4,800) to replace said heatsink (because the procedure also involved installing a new motherboard) and, unsurprisingly, the owner didn’t fancy shelling out that much for a repair.
So, they left it for a year before deciding to go the DIY route and create a new cooling solution themselves. And as you can see in the photo above, it is something extraordinary.

The Redditor replaced the copper heatsink and “put a liquid cooler on it,” the latter made in the shape of a box with tubes running to the gaming laptop.
We’re told the laptop couldn’t be tested while gaming to check if this left field liquid cooling is actually good at keeping the Razer Blade 16’s engine running while running a game, but Redditor claims the device has been idle for half an hour. They can’t fully test it yet because they forgot their Windows password, so they need to reinstall the operating system.
The total cost of the repair? £100 (around $130 / AU$190) using a kit bought on Amazon and of course Razer wanted 25 times as much.
Analysis: chaotic goodness
Obviously, there are some important caveats to keep in mind here, particularly that a fair amount of technical knowledge is required to perform a repair like this. And the way this particular cooler is implemented seems shaky, to say the least, with the giant cooling reservoir formed from what appears to be a plastic storage box, with plugs and cables placed haphazardly on top. As one commenter puts it, this is very much a “chaotic” looking solution, although it is “chaotically good” in the sense that it has brought the dead gaming laptop back to life.
Of course, the case and overall setup can be fixed, and leaking coolant tubes are still a concern; that would really finish off the Razer laptop. And obviously this makes the laptop not portable at all, but I guess that’s better than not being functional.
Overall, it’s clearly an eye-opening feat, but I can’t stress enough that it’s something I would do. No We recommend that you try it yourself. It will be interesting to see if we get an update from Redditor confirming what kind of temperatures the Blade reports when playing demanding PC games or when running a stress test.
As one fan of the concept on Reddit enthuses: “This is sick, especially for the super high-end Blade models that people use as desktops, this is great for keeping temperatures down.”
This story also raises a question about how ridiculous laptop repair costs can get when a relatively insignificant component in terms of the overall bill of materials may require a major change like a motherboard swap.
