As AI development continues and models improve from generation to generation, fears remain about how useful this technology will actually be in practice and whether AI will reach a ceiling before it has a significant impact.
Although roles, responsibilities and jobs are being replaced in the name of AI, does that mean it is changing things for the better?
“We, as a global community, have to get to a point where we are using this to do something useful… Otherwise, I don’t think this makes much sense… In fact, I will say that we will quickly lose even the social permission to take something like energy, which is a scarce resource, and use it to generate these tokens.”

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2026 about the impact of AI on the global economy and the business world.

In his comments, Nadella acknowledged the tensions at the heart of the AI expansionism that has captured not only big tech companies but the vast majority of the business world.
For AI to continue to grow at the rate it has (not only in terms of the compute needed to train the models but also for inference as usage grows) we will need many data centers to process tokens. And to create these tokens, AI pioneers will need a lot of energy.
Find obstacles
Burning as much electricity as AI companies plan to do for AI has caused alarm among the public, particularly because much of this has required building infrastructure near populated areas in towns and cities.
Nadella acknowledged that there has been a productivity gap between the hype around AI and the significant impact on people’s lives, warning that without something to point to, discomfort will emerge and become more obstructive.
As time goes on, we see tensions rising as people (and even lawmakers) oppose new data center projects due to concerns about the impact on the energy grid, environmental damage, and local communities.
