Cololight develops speakers for ‘floating’ gaming chairs

Desktop accessories brand Cololight is working on an interesting addition to gamers’ setups: a pair of speakers that appear to float around your head to create a more immersive experience while you get destroyed in your favorite competitive shooter.

The Chimera speaker set attaches to any gaming chair with a universal clamp system and can be adjusted to suit your posture and how much you lean in your seat.

It will connect via an auxiliary cable or wirelessly with an included 2.4GHz dongle to your PC, console, Steam Deck, or mobile device to direct sound like a pair of oversized open-back headphones. Without a headband supporting your head for long sessions, you won’t feel the usual fatigue and discomfort that you might experience with some bulky headphones.

Honestly, this seems more like a preference than a solution to a serious comfort problem. If you enjoy the sound of speakers but want them directed at your ears, you can consider them among the many headphones currently on the market.

Cololight says the speakers have been designed for gaming audio with an immersive soundstage. Each speaker features nine tweeters for high-mid frequencies and a four-inch woofer designed to deliver deep bass in a near-field environment.

With the speakers mounted right where you can hear them best, you can expect to hear detailed ambient sounds in games and have a better idea of where your enemies are approaching from than with conventional desktop speakers.

Chimera also includes a microphone that eliminates echoes and external noise, so you can speak clearly in team voice chats.

This certainly looks like it will add another dimension to your gaming sessions, without breaking the bank. It doesn’t hurt that they look cool if you enjoy a cyberpunk aesthetic in your lair.

Cololight is currently crowdfunding the Chimera on Kickstarter, where the set sells for $219 (below the expected MSRP of $359). That includes the microphone and the full set of mounting hardware.

All crowdfunding campaigns carry an element of risk, so you’ll want to keep that in mind if you decide to back this campaign. For what it’s worth, Cololight has been in the accessories business for a while now and sells a range of gaming-focused products through its online store. It also previously made a surround-sound chair speaker, so this isn’t the first time it’s created an audio system.

If all goes as planned, the Chimera is scheduled to ship worldwide in November (free for most countries); A $30 shipping fee will only be added to orders from a handful of countries.
