‘GPU price will increase significantly,’ warns PC maker, as rumors suggest it’s the end of the road for Nvidia’s RTX 5090
- US PC maker says “retail prices for GPUs are expected to increase significantly”
- Another rumor suggests that AMD has just increased the cost of VRAM, which will affect graphics card prices.
- Rounding out a trio of new rumors is the claim that Nvidia has discontinued the RTX 5090
There have been some developments in the world of GPUs over the weekend, and none of them bode well for graphics card prices in the future.
For starters, Wccftech reports that, according to Board Channels, a fairly reliable forum for supply chain conversations in China, AMD has increased the cost of the GDDR6 video RAM it sells to its board manufacturing partners. This means that those graphics card manufacturers will inevitably pass that cost on to consumers, if this rumor is accurate, of course.
Bench Life further notes that more expensive VRAM isn’t the only upward price pressure here, and that the cost of other graphics card components, including the main circuit board itself, is also increasing.

Second, as Wccftech also noted, we have a custom PC maker in the US, StinceBuilt, telling us at
Finally, VideoCardz highlighted another post about
In theory, that means it’s the end of the line for the flagship RTX 5090, with its replacement (the RTX 6090 in theory) still quite far in the distance (a more recent rumor indicates it will likely land in 2028).
Analysis: a cacophony of warning bells
Of all those feelings, the last one needs the most seasoning, although it is quite believable that Nvidia is essentially canning the RTX 5090. By this I mean that if this is true, I don’t think it will be an official (announced) discontinuation, but the way it will play out is that Nvidia will allocate so few chips for the GeForce flagship that stocks will effectively dwindle to almost nothing.
Arguably we’re already seeing some evidence of this, certainly in the US, where at Newegg, for example, you can’t buy an RTX 5090 directly from the retailer, but only from third-party sellers (often in Asia). And the cost of the graphics card is approaching $9,000, such is its scarcity, and you’ll pay from £6,000 upwards in the UK, although there is at least stock available to buy direct from UK retailers. Still, I wonder how long that will last; and the idea of Nvidia quietly pulling the plug on the RTX 5090 behind the scenes certainly seems possible.
Meanwhile, the suggestion of a price increase for AMD’s Radeon GPU supports similar recent rumors, and the US PC maker’s warning that prices are going to “rise significantly” is another ominous addition to the warning bells that have been ringing of late.
I remain of the opinion that it is a good idea to buy sooner rather than later, even though GPUs are already overpriced, because I fear that the situation could get substantially worse in 2027, as the rumors indicate.
The key question is how long it could take for GPUs to recover from these price pressures. Again, I have a suspicion it might take a lot longer than we expected.
